8 Easy Tips to Prevent the Cold and Flu

cold flu

Catching the flu and a cold can be a real hassle, affecting our daily lives, work, and quality time with loved ones. But the good news is you can take steps to avoid them. With some solid knowledge and simple health practices focused on cold and flu prevention, you can really cut down your chances of catching these common illnesses. Get ready to boost your health and stay protected! Let’s dive into these eight easy tips for cold and flu prevention.

1. Wash Your Hands Frequently

Believe it or not, something as simple as handwashing can fight off cold and flu viruses. When you wash your hands with soap and water, you wipe out germs and makes it harder for you to get sick. Lather up well and make sure you scrub every bit, from the back of your hands to under your nails. Make sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, which is about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.

2. Use Hand Sanitiser

If you can’t find soap and water, hand sanitiser with alcohol in it does a pretty good job of getting rid of germs. Choose hand sanitisers with at least 60% alcohol, because anything less doesn’t fight viruses as well. Squeeze out a little bit of sanitiser (think dime-sized) and rub your hands together until they’re dry.

3. Avoid Touching Your Face

Cold and flu viruses can sneak into your body through mucous membranes in your eyes, nose, and mouth. Touching your face with unwashed hands can easily transfer germs to where they can make you sick. Try to be mindful of this habit and avoid touching your face, especially when you’re in public places or after you’ve touched something that might not be clean.

4. Practise Respiratory Hygiene

When you cough or sneeze, you can spray tiny droplets with viruses into the air, which is a big deal for cold and flu prevention. These droplets can carry germs that might infect people near you. To help stop spreading germs, a key part of cold and flu prevention, make sure to cough or sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your elbow. Catching those droplets this way helps keep everyone around you healthier. After using a tissue, toss it and wash your hands well to keep the cold and flu germs away.

5. Boost Your Immune System

Your immune system works really hard to keep you safe from colds and flu. Keeping up with healthy habits supports your immune system, making you less likely to get sick. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps your immune system stay strong. To keep your immune system strong, make sure to exercise regularly, sleep enough, handle stress, and stay hydrated.

6. Clean and Disinfect Surfaces

Cold and flu viruses love hanging out on different surfaces at your home and office. To keep germs from spreading, regularly give a good clean to high-touch areas like doorknobs, light switches, and tech devices. A diluted bleach solution or your go-to disinfectant spray can take care of viruses and germs on almost any surface.

7. Stay Hydrated

Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water to stay healthy and keep your immune system strong. Drinking plenty of fluids helps your nose and throat stay moist, making it easier to trap viruses before they make you sick. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and for some variety, herbal tea and clear broths are also hydrating choices.

8. Wear a Mask

Wearing a mask can slow down the spread droplets containing cold and flu viruses, especially when you can’t keep your distance from others. Find a mask that fits nicely and covers both your nose and mouth, and wear it consistently when you’re in crowded indoor spaces, using public transportation, or when you’re close to people. Masks work as one more protective layer to help stop respiratory infections, right along with good hand hygiene and keeping space between you and others.

The joy of staying healthy.
